Tselentis on SKAI: Why was the Evia earthquake felt – The data on Alkyonides

by

As A. Tselentis pointed out, this area (in Evia) “has not given us earthquakes for so many years”. “When many years ago they wanted to build a nuclear power plant, the only area they chose was this one because it had no seismicity,” he said characteristically.

Over 80 aftershocks have been produced by last night’s 5 Richter earthquake in Evia, with 4.4 Richter being the largest, he told SKAI and the show Today, the Akis Tselentis, director of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, clarifying however that this is a normal post-earthquake sequence.

Showing a map on his cellphone (pictured below), he explained that the blue and green spots are the aftershocks. “You also see a red line (…) it was a horizontal fault in the direction of Athens, the energy of the fault “ran” towards Athensand that’s why the earthquake was so felt in the capital” noted the professor.

“This rift has no potential for a bigger earthquake, let it give 5.3, that’s what I believe” commented Akis Tselentis. “This specific fault has too small dimensions to affect other faults” he added.

As he pointed out, this region (in Evia) “has not given us earthquakes for so many years”. “When many years ago they wanted to build a nuclear power plant the only area they chose was this one because it had no seismicity,” he said characteristically.

“Our problem they are the old stone houses… Residents should avoid them, especially if they have some cracks,” he stressed.

Alkyonides

“Two areas are gathering energy, one in the Ionian, I’m not worried at all, it has suffered bigger earthquakes, so we don’t have any problems, and the Eastern Corinthian area, the Alcyonides area, which has 40 years to produce an earthquake. That’s where energy is gathered,” explained Mr. Tselentis.

“Sometime in the next few years, 3,4,5 years, we will have an event. We may even reach 6 Richter” he stated.

It is noted that today, Wednesday, schools of all grades in South Evia will remain closed, while the state apparatus remains alert.

Statements of seismologists for Evia

“We recommend calmness, we are monitoring the evolution of the phenomenon,” the president of the Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection Organization, Efthimios Lekkas, told SKAI.

Ganas: “We don’t know if the 5 Richter was the master”

The Geodynamic Institute research director and seismologist Thanasis Ganas he told SKAI 100.3 that we need other data to see how big the fault is and what potential it has.

He added, however, that we are not talking about a fault that can give 6 Richter. He pointed out, however, that “we still cannot say that the 5 Richter is the main earthquake”.

He said that residents living in old houses in villages in the Styro area should be careful.

Mr. Ganas also stated that there is no reason to worry about faults near Athens and added that the earthquakes are felt because of the close distance.

Papadopoulos: “We need time”

“We don’t know if 5 Richter was the master” said Gerasimos Papadopoulos in his post on Facebook.

1. Hasty and flippant opinion yesterday that yesterday’s 4.7 was probably the main one. Personally I was very wary.
2. Nor do we know if the evening 5.0 earthquake is the main one. It needs careful consideration and consideration of many elements. So we need time.
3. Whoever opened a public discussion about the Alkyonides yesterday should close it immediately. We have no serious evidence, but we are not allowed to discuss it publicly at a time when Evia is in full agitation.
