Find out what opened and what closed in the region of Barra Funda in the pandemic

The renovation of the Barra Funda region, in the center of São Paulo, is part of a movement that began about five years ago. One of the main restaurants in the city, the Korean Komah, opened its doors on Cônego Vicente Miguel Marino Street in 2016, while A Dama e Os Vagabundos, the pub that kicked off the current gastronomic season on Rua Souza Lima, opened in 2017 .

In addition, some cool houses, such as the Miúda and De Caquinho bars, turn two years old at the end of 2021 — that is, they spent part of their brief life with the room closed because of the pandemic.

With the gradual return of commercial activities, some businessmen decided to bet in the region to open their businesses after the combination of industrial scenario, central location and cheaper rents.

This is reflected in places like Pina, a cocktail bar opened in September on Rua Brigadeiro Galvão by bartender Gabriel Szklo. The house’s proposal is to offer good and cheap drinks — at happy hour, cocktails start at R$ 14.

After going through branches in places like Mica and Riviera, he says that he chose the region to open his first business, as he identified that there was still little offer of cocktails there for a young and increasingly broad public. “Furthermore, the neighborhood’s proletarian origins dialogue with our proposal for the democratization of drinks, something that would not fit in Jardins or Itaim Bibi, for example,” he says.

Despite the many openings, the region also faced casualties during this period. Places like the Scar and A Barra bars were some of those that said goodbye.

A space that stayed there for a short time was the Sindicato cyclists bar, on Alameda Glete. The house opened its doors in October, but had to go on hiatus now in December. The good news is that the team guarantees that a new headquarters will reopen at a new address in 2022, in the Barra Funda region.
