Stricter measures ahead of Christmas with restrictions on entry to nightclubs for those who have not done a third installment, increased testing throughout the population and extension of school holidays, suggested the professor of Pulmonology at the University of Crete, Nikos Tzanakis, speaking to SK “Today”.
As mentioned, the Omicron mutation now exists in the community and the scenario that it does not prevail is now infinitesimal. “We are talking about a scenario of domination of Omicron and I think that during the holidays we will have developments or at the beginning of January at the latest. “Omicron is developing dizzyingly but we do not know its full clinical profile, we do not know to what extent it causes severe disease and to whom,” he said characteristically.
Although according to Mr. Tzanakis the first laboratory data show that there is an effectiveness of the vaccines especially with the third dose, we have to wait another two weeks to see the clinical data. “People who have been vaccinated with the third dose and especially young people should not be afraid at all, if they pay attention to the basics,” he pointed out. He added that those over the age of 60 and those who have not been vaccinated at all should definitely be vaccinated, while those who have not taken the third dose should hurry to get it.
At the same time, Mr. Tzanakis stressed the need to take new measures for schools, such as the extension of school holidays or their early start, but also the ban on excursions, as in recent days there has been a 5% increase in cases – 7% at the ages of 0-18 years.
Especially for Christmas, he proposed stricter measures for those who are not vaccinated with a third dose in order to enter the nightclubs and increased testing in the whole population, vaccinated and unvaccinated.
“The health system will continue to be under pressure after the holidays, the deaths for another week will be high and then they will start to decrease slightly and we will see a significant decrease shortly after the holidays,” he added.
Asked about the possibility of hypermutation with the combination of Delta and Omicron, the professor stressed that it is an approach that can be applied and in case the infected person is immunologically insufficient and for a long time this burden of the two viruses may exchange between their genetic material and emerge a “chimera” virus that can be many directions. “One is to stay the same, the other to become much gentler and the third to become much more serious,” he concluded.
