Thanks to the donation of other transplants, a new cornea transplant on a 60-year-old patient was successfully performed today at Papageorgiou Hospital
Her family’s generous decision of deceased 21-year-old Emma, to donate her organs, has raised awareness and inspired many of our fellow human beings to follow her example. Thanks to the offer of other transplants, a new cornea transplant on a 60-year-old patient was successfully performed on Thursday, December 8, at the Papageorgiou Hospital, while similar operations are planned for the following days as well.
“The transplant was done in a patient who was practically blind. Everything went great and we are following her progress. From the beginning of the year until November we had carried out 25 transplants, while after the 21-year-old’s organ donation there is a rapid increase in the supply of transplants, due to the mobilization of new donors. The rate of increase reaches 20% within a week”, says the Director of the 2nd University Ophthalmology Clinic and the Cornea Transplantation Center of the Hospital Nikolaos Ziakas.
The mobilization that has led to an increase in the number of transplants will also give hope to other patients with severe vision problems, who are on a waiting list waiting for the coveted “gift”.
The team of the Transplantation Center of G.N. Papageorgiou will perform another transplant on Saturday, December 10, while two others are scheduled for next Monday, December 12.
