The first corvette will be built in France in 3 years and the next three in Greek Shipyards
The French Naval Group has released its proposal for the Greek Navy’s corvette program. The proposal concerns in four Gowind corvettes, with the three being built in Greece and the first to be delivered in three years.
The proposal includes Greek participation at 30% of the value of the contract and added value with provision for hundreds of long-term jobs.
In particular, as noted, the French group submitted on December 1, 2022 a bid for the Navy’s corvette program. Based on the already sea-tested Gowind corvette and an optimized delivery schedule, it includes a Greek Industry Participation plan with 30% of the project value in Greece and hundreds of jobs in Greece over the next 40 years.
As emphasized in a Naval Group announcement, the construction of the first Gowind corvette in France “will ensure its operational integration by Greece in the shortest period of time, only three years after the entry into force of the contract”.
Leveraging Naval Group’s extensive technology transfer know-how, the first corvette will be built in France in 3 years and the following units in Greek Shipyards.

– 4 Gowind® corvettes with 3 to be built in Greece by Hellenic Shipyards and the first to be delivered in 3 years.
– Secure technology transfer for local manufacturing thanks to Naval Group’s unrivaled expertise and successful track record
30% of the value of the contract with Greek participation and added value and provision for hundreds of long-term jobs
a long-term partnership with Greek industry and the national defense ecosystem following the FDI HN program to create and maintain high-value jobs
– A very attractive financing proposal based on long-term deferred payments
– Secure technology transfer and optimized delivery schedule
Naval Group has unparalleled experience in successfully building surface ships and submarines locally. Thanks to its decades of know-how, the Group has developed a robust and reliable process to ensure a successful and safe transfer of technology to its partners.
This unique expertise is key to ensuring that the program will maximize the participation of Greek companies and the success of “Made in Greece”, while guaranteeing the Hellenic Navy quality, timely delivery and ship performance. In this respect, Naval Group excels as a choice to ensure a risk-free production in Greece by the Greek industry.
The construction of the 1st Gowind® corvette in France will ensure its operational integration by Greece in the shortest time with flag transfer only 3 years after the entry into force of the contract.
Subsequent units will be built in Greece by Hellenic Shipyards with the first corvette to be built locally in Greece only being delivered one year after the first unit and thereafter at a rate of 1 Gowind® every 12 months.
The training of the Greek partners during the production of the first ship will ensure the transfer of technology that will allow the construction of the corvettes in Greece. This will ensure long-term autonomy for the Hellenic Navy and significant economic benefits for Greece’s naval and defense industry and for the supply chain in Greece.
A strong participation plan of the Greek Industry with provision for the preservation of hundreds of jobs
The Naval Group is committed to guaranteeing the success of the corvette program as well as supporting Greek sovereignty by supporting the participation of the Greek industrial ecosystem.
With the Hellenic Industry Participation (HIP) plan for the Gowind® HN program, Naval Group will ensure economic benefits in Greece of at least 30% of the program value by:
– Maximizing Greek industrial activity through the involvement of Greek industry in the production in Greece of GWD corvettes starting with the 2nd ship in the series.
– Development of the autonomy of the Follow-up Support (FOS) for the seamless use of the corvettes
– Expanding the industrial participation of Greek industrial partners that are part of the Naval Group’s supply chain and in other programs carried out by the Naval Group (domestic and international).
– Development and strengthening of R&D cooperation with Greek partners, especially for European projects
– Development of innovations in the maritime/maritime sector
The Gowind® HN program will contribute to the activation and strengthening of a dense network of industrial and R&D collaborations, enabling Greek industry to address the modernization plan of the Hellenic Naval Forces, while at the same time creating and maintaining jobs and economic benefits for the country in next decades.
The construction of the three corvettes in Greece thanks to the transfer of technology from the Naval Group will maintain more than 1,200 jobs at the shipyard partnering for the program, while the production of material in Greece will contribute to more than 150 jobs in the field of construction and repairs. As the ships will be in service for more than 40 years, the support that follows will also provide opportunities for up to 500 highly skilled jobs.
In addition to the corvette program, the Naval Group’s Hellenic Industry Participation (HIP) plan will bring new opportunities to Greek industry, maintaining highly skilled jobs and creating long-term economic conditions for growth in Greece thanks to a major transfer of production.
It is a fact that the French group has designed a very ambitious industrial cooperation plan that will contribute and lead to the revitalization and profitability of the maritime industry while significantly increasing Greece’s autonomy and sovereignty. It will strengthen the international recognition of the excellence of the Greek naval industry, while offering the best warships “Made in Greece” for the defense of the citizens and the interests of the country.
Beyond the manufacturing of Gowind® corvettes, the local ecosystem will gradually acquire the know-how and benefit from the most modern and state-of-the-art maintenance methods and tools required to effectively maintain FDI HN frigates as well as Gowind® HN corvettes across during their operational life. In addition to ensuring the sovereignty of the Navy, this long-term approach will develop the viability of Greek companies by providing them with the opportunity for continuous activity during the life cycle of the ships, conditions for dynamic growth, employment and operational efficiency in the coming decades.
More than 55 Greek companies have been pre-selected or are in the process of joining the Naval Group’s supply chain. All specialized Greek companies are integrated into the supply chains of the French industrial group and have the possibility to participate in other future international tenders, thus increasing their potential as well as their potential financial benefit and visibility in the global maritime market.
