The residents of the arid island face shortages of supplies and medicines
Its residents are sending out a “cry” of anguish Agathonisiou which has been without a ship since November 28th. “Kalymnos Island” which serves the island, is offline due to severe impact damage.
In the morning, residents once again protested on the air of Radio Proto and Vima of Kos about the fact that they have not had a boat for 3 weeks. In fact, they asked all those in charge to take their responsibilities.
At the same time, they were special sharpand for the fact that no way of cooperation has been found with a ship from Rhodes that has expressed interest in making the routes and its capacity would serve residents and trucks.
The mayor Evangelos Kottoros emphasized that the problem is serious because Agathonisi is served mainly through Samos and since November 28 there is no connection.
Residents have been waiting for the Joy Star since last Friday, which is still in the Ionian Sea due to bad weather and it is unknown when it will arrive in the Dodecanese.
Agathonisi is the unique island of those that serve the island of Kalymnos, which has been left without any ships as the other islands are served by regular routes by ships of the line.
Residents of Agathonisi – “We feel like 3rd class citizens”
“We feel like 3rd class citizens. The authorities had to have an alternative solution as apart from the damage of N. Kalymnos, the particular ship goes out of line for inspection every year for about 2 months. Fish farms will be closed. 30 people work and they cannot transport the goods. They are forced to go to Samos every day by boat, 2.5 hours to go and another hour to return.”
“With the first ship we will leave Agathonisi – The food has run out”
Several residents have decided to leave Agathonisi with the first ship because the situation is unbearable. “They are forcing us to leave the island. Many residents have already made the decision to leave as soon as the first ship arrives. Holidays are coming and we can’t buy a single present. Most foods in the two grocery stores are expired. Let those in charge take their responsibilities because they don’t pay any attention to us.”
Mayor of Agathonisi: “Problem in food, medicines and fish farms”
The mayor, Mr. Kottoros, confirmed that the problem is very big as Agathonisi is mainly served by Samos and the line has been cut. We moved immediately as a municipal authority with the ministry but there was no interest in the tenders and so a smaller ship is coming. We currently have a big problem in supplies, medicine and fish farming.’
To a question about the ship from Rhodes that meets all the specifications, the mayor replied that it is a matter for the ministry. “If the island of Kalymnos does not return by January 22, a large ship should be launched immediately. At the moment neither the passengers nor the trucks are served, all of which are done with Samos. A bigger ship, the Joy Star, must be brought in and clearly there should always be an alternative.”
Yannis Pappas: “Joy Star on Thursday in Agathonisi – We are pushing for solutions”
Dodecanese Member of Parliament Yiannis Pappa said that due to the weather the arrival of the Joy Star has been delayed and it is expected to start sailing on Thursday.
“I was informed that the ship will be in Agathonisi on Thursday and for 4 consecutive days it will make the itineraries so that the island can be served and normality will be restored. In no case are the residents responsible and they have the right to ask for a ship. We are also pushing for other solutions.”
