Thessaloniki: Dozens of Santas in Thermaikos

by

About 80 members of the Friends of the Sea Club donned their holiday gear and entered the water to have fun and remind those along the Beach that Christmas is coming.

Dozens of… Santa Clauses, wearing their characteristic caps, “bathed” in Thermaikos Gulf, offering unique images and joy to those who were lucky enough to see them.

The reason for about 80 members of the adult coastal rowing section of the Friends of the Sea Club, who dressed in festive clothes and entered the water to have fun themselves, but also to remind those along the New and Old Beaches of Thessaloniki that they are approaching Christmas.

From early on Saturday morning, the rowers – not only experienced but also beginners – gathered at the facilities of the Friends of the Sea Club, put their boats in the water, put on their uniforms and caps – a trademark of the popular Saint – and with great fun entered the water, where a party ensued!

Those who were enjoying their walk on the beach of Thessaloniki were surprised to see a… traffic jam of rowing boats in Thermaikos.

Santa Rowing, as this special Christmas celebration is called, took place for the sixth year and always supports voluntary clubs. This year he supported the club “Agapi” of Vasiliki Komnos.

Coastal rowing

The coastal rowing section of the Friends of the Sea Club is the first fully organized rowing section in Greece, which deals exclusively with coastal rowing. It was founded in collaboration with the athlete and for many years world champion Nikos Gudula.

Coastal rowing is the extreme version of Olympic rowing. Here the athletes do not row in calm waters (flat water), in lakes and rivers, but in the open sea (rough water) having to face, in addition to their opponents, all the prevailing weather conditions!

It is not enough for the inshore paddler to have good technique and physical condition, but he should have very good orientation, know how to paddle in all weathers and know basic safety principles at sea. A noble and demanding sport that harmoniously exercises the whole body and is aimed at everyone, men and women, who love the sea.

“Love”

The “Agapi” Association of Vasiliki Komnos, which was supported by this year’s Santa Rowing, was introduced by the former champion of the Friends of the Sea Club Eleni Tsoni, who in 2019 lost her 15-year-old daughter Vasiliki Komnos due to viral myocarditis.

The main goal of the Association is to inform about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and to donate automatic defibrillators to schools, clubs and wherever there is a need.
