The driver of the fatal tourist bus that claimed the life of a 53-year-old man is suspected by Romanian authorities of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm

“He is a very careful driver. The nickname “fireball” does not apply. My client drives very slowly,” Alexandros Matthaiou told ERT, referring to what his client claimed to the Romanian authorities after the tragic car accident in Bucharest that killed a 53-year-old man and injured 25 passengers.

“The driver has been free since Saturday morning. No date has been set for him to testify,” Mr. Mathaiou said in “Connections”, explaining that the 52-year-old driver, after the incident in Bucharest, has the right to work in Greece, but not in Romania.

Asked if the bus driver was tired, he declined to comment, saying that people had no complaints about his driving. Regarding whether the accident was caused by the fact that there was no other driver, Mr. Matthaiou emphatically asserted that “he was not tired” adding that he made many stops along the way.

“He was driving from Thessaloniki to Bucharest. He got behind the wheel in Thessaloniki at 11 o’clock I think and arrived at noon the next day in Bucharest. He stopped on the road many times” argued Mr. Matthaiou.

Speaking about the crucial second that claimed the life of the 53-year-old from Larissa who was traveling with his wife, he said that his principal had to make a decision at the last minute and unfortunately he made the one that caused the collision with the warning pillar of the sign. “It had a GPS,” added Mr. Matthaiou, pointing out that he does not know if it was configured for use as a car or as a bus.

It’s psychologically bad

The Romanian authorities suspect the driver of the fatal tourist bus that killed a 53-year-old man from Larissa and injured several other passengers for manslaughter and bodily harm.

Speaking about his principal, he emphasized that after expressing his regret for the tragic incident, he is worried about his future, saying that he “hopes to find a job”.

As he said, his client is in shock and is facing psychological problems. He also revealed that he changed hotels so as not to be in the same area as the passengers as spirits were high after the crash in Bucharest.

Unanswered questions and passenger testimonials

According to information, the driver, at the last moment, decided to change course to pass under the bridge, while he had not seen the warning signs.

The driver’s advocate also referred to the construction errors of the road in Bucharest as well as the poor workmanship in the heavy iron arch emphasizing that since September when it was repaired there have been at least 6 accidents.

Specialist experts are called to investigate the reason why the driver of the fatal coach with 47 passengers did not notice the signage warning of the permitted height of vehicles.
