In the already distant month of November, while the World Cup was running wild on the lawns of Qatar, another competition in Brazil determined who had the best West Coast IPA.
And in this cup, the champion was Split, from Minas Gerais brewery Koala San Brew, from Nova Lima, on the same day that Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in the World Cup (coincidence?).
Promoted by Hop Growers of America (HGA), a non-profit trade organization whose main objective is to support American hop producers, the HGA Best Brazilian Craft Beer 2022 – Best Brazilian Craft Beer 2022 had ten breweries among the finalists: São Paulo Tarantino, SatirusBrewery and Leuven; Alright Brewing, from Paraná; Rio de Janeiro’s Three Monkeys; the gaúchas Narcose and 4 Árvores; Lohn Bier from Santa Catarina; and Zalaz from Minas Gerais, in addition to Koala.
Each of the breweries received 40 kg of four varieties of American hops from HGA to use in the best way. The contest, held blindly, had a jury made up of ten professionals from the sector.
“In 2022 we definitely celebrate this style of the west coast of the United States. The West Coasts formed the foundation and foundation of what we are today, as brewers and brewery”, posted Koala on social networks.
The West Coast IPA style is known for its sharper bitterness and more citrusy aromas—Split is 7.2% alcohol. Koala launched more than ten style labels over the year just ended.
