The popularity of the Fiat 500 is undeniable, and this is easily confirmed by turning your head and seeing the diminutive and cute Italian model rolling around somewhere. But the Fiat 500e is another story! It is a model designed from “white paper” and believe us, this makes it even more unique, even more special.
We understand that the most common response someone has when they see the new electric Fiat 500 is that it is another … five hundred simply with an “electric heart”. It is partly true, but the feeling it will give you from the first steps of driving it is completely different.
The Italians have managed to graft into the new electric 500 everything that the icon named 500 has in its DNA. It is so different, but so recognizable compared to the conventional 500, while it is the first electric city model that managed to have exactly the same dimensions to have 3 different bodies: hatchback, cabrio and 3+1. The latter is what we had at our disposal…
The only thing that differentiates the Fiat 500e 3+1 compared to all other versions is the extra door on the passenger side, which opens in front and helps the rear passengers get in and out more easily. One might reasonably ask, just that? The answer we give is that you don’t need anything more! It scores points for the 500e’s practicality with this feature alone, aiding owners in their everyday lives. The absence of the center pillar on the right side has an impact on the stiffness of the car and some small creaks are noticeable mainly due to the absence of other noises (these electric cars have them).
But the decision-makers placed some reinforcements, adding a total of 30 kg more than the hatchback with the aim of increasing safety, eliminating distortions and vibrations that the driver may feel at the wheel, which is achieved with complete success.
Along with the practicality comes the decent comfort of the passengers and the tolerable spaces for a model in the category. In other words, you will be able to travel, storing the essentials in the 185 liters of the luggage compartment, but the rear passengers should be small children, because otherwise they will need frequent rest stops.
As we mentioned above, the car has been designed from the ground up and this is also clear from the interior, where it hardly resembles the Fiat 500 with the thermal engine. In this case we find a dashboard with excellent quality materials and very well assembled. In the center is the 10.25-inch touchscreen that “runs” Uconnect5 with beautiful graphics. This includes all modern connectivity methods such as 5G networks and wireless mirroring of your smartphone (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). Embossed touches such as the classic 500 on the door handles and the specific Torino location elevate the aesthetics of the cabin. Behind the steering wheel there is a 7-inch screen that acts as a digital instrument panel and displays all the information the driver needs.
Under the hood is the 118 hp, 220 Nm of torque electric motor, which is combined with the 42 kWh battery (37.3 kWh useful), allowing the small model to travel up to 462 km in the city on a single charge. In real (and mixed conditions) we managed to travel 270 to 300 km and with a consumption of 12 to 13 kWh/100 km. Also, on the plus side, it can be charged quickly via a Wallbox (in about 4 hours with an 11 kWh) . The Fiat 500e 3+1 has three driving modes: Normal, Range and Sherpa, with the latter reducing the engine’s performance, lowering the maximum speed to 80 km/h and the air conditioning system being “underpowered” to offer the greatest autonomy .
On the road the 500e feels like a larger class car and it drives quietly. Of course, if the value on the speedometer exceeds 100 km/h, there are some aerodynamic noises without disturbing. However, the car is mainly for the city out there and the light steering wheel cuts a lot.
Practicality and refinement are some of the elements that characterize the Fiat 500e 3+1 and it is available from 26,627 euros together with the government subsidy Kinoumai Electrika 2. Of course, it also offers the factory warranty for the battery of 8 years or 160,000 km and 5 years free roadside assistance service.
