Unrepentant negative parents do not send their children to school – A total of 23 children from 18 families in the Regional Unit of Heraklion are deprived of their education

24 minor children in the Primary and Secondary education of Heraklion, have not attended school since the beginning of this school year until today, with the risk of losing the year if they continue to make unjustified absences.

As the neakriti.gr, victims of their parents, who are against the new coronavirus, the measures to deal with the pandemic, but also the national vaccination plan, are 17 children who do not go to 10 primary schools, 6 children who are deprived of their education and socialization in 6 kindergartens and a child in high school in a provincial school, including several siblings.

In the first year, teachers try to persuade the 19 families responding to the existing protection measures to deal with the pandemic, with dialogue as the main weapon, however, if the teachers’ effort does not bear fruit, except for the immediate consequences for the students who they will be forced to repeat the class, the parents are in danger of being brought to justice.

“We are in an open line of communication with school principals and with the start of classes, immediately after the holidays, we will investigate each case separately,” said the Director of Primary Education of Heraklion, Manolis Beladakis, speaking to neakriti.gr and adds: “Principals will call the parents who do not allow their children to attend, explain the reasons and in those cases where the absence is unjustified, we will contact the juvenile prosecutor, in order to follow the legal procedure.”

In fact, Mr. Beladakis recalled the recent change in the legal framework (published in the Official Gazette on December 10), which, among other things, suggests the philosophy of both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Justice, which considers the education of children and the right to education is the highest good.

As stated to neakriti.gr, the Director of Secondary Education of Heraklion, Ioannis Karagiannidis, “The measures must be observed strictly, as they apply to everyone. “Children must participate in the lifelong learning function of all schools.”

As Mr. Karagiannidis noted, the parents show that they understand that by carefully observing all the measures, we will soon return to pre-pandemic normalcy “.

Both point out that the cases of children who did not attend life lessons during the previous school year were much higher, a fact that shows that parents have now begun to understand.

It is worth noting that all this time the Ministry of Education is registering the students of Primary and Secondary education of the territory who are not in school for this reason.

The intervention of Justice

Of course, many negative parents may not be aware that their attitude – by not sending their children to school refusing to follow the measures provided to deal with the spread of the coronavirus – may face the risk of criminal prosecution. prosecution, which carries a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine, or even deprivation of custody of their children.

According to the Secretary General of Primary and Secondary Education and Special Education of the Ministry of Education, Alexandros Koptsis, if the regulatory framework of schools is not observed, which includes measures against the spread of the coronavirus, children who are absent are charged with unjustified absences.

Under the regulatory framework, school principals are required to inform parents that they are required to send their children to school. If they continue to break the law, justice intervenes. That is, the Directorate of each school, according to the current protocol, has the authority to inform the Directorate of Primary or Secondary Education depending on where each child attends. From there, the Directorate of Education, in turn, informs the Ministry of Education, which is the one that decides whether the child’s file will be sent to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office or not, with all that entails for parents who insist on their negative attitude.

It is recalled that from the floor of Parliament, the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, has sent a clear message that no one can deprive a child of his education, presenting the amendment which introduces imprisonment and a fine, while it is even possible of the removal of custody, to parents and guardians of minors who fail to register or supervise their attendance. The amendment was tabled jointly with the Minister of Justice Konstantinos Tsiaras, in the bill for the National School of Judges and in particular stipulates that: . “Anyone who has the custody or real care of a minor and fails to register or supervise his / her attendance is punishable by up to (2) years in prison and a fine.”

Negative parents in Lassithi

One of the many cases of negative parents was the one in Lassithi a few days ago. Parents who did not let their children go to school for a single day from the beginning of this school year were faced with the risk of being prosecuted. The specific case was reported to the Primary Education of Lassithi and the person in charge of the management of the Covid-19 disease for the primary schools of the regional unit, which gave a clear instruction to the school management: parents, in order for the latter to be co-ordinated, the file should be immediately forwarded to the Lassithi Prosecutor’s Office “. However, the belief that eventually the two parents would change their mind and decide to send their children to school, expressed the head of the Directorate of Primary Education, Manolis Markakis, speaking to neakriti.gr.

This is the second incident in Lassithi, as since the beginning of the school year the Regional Unit of Lassithi has been informed about another case. In the past, another family, who were deprived of schooling by their child, was finally convinced, after the intervention of the prosecutor. The mother, according to the Covid disease management department of Lassithi Primary Education, decided to comply and eventually her child returned to school, avoiding the worst, ie missing the school year due to absences.
