Climate change is here: Afanto snow in the Alps – The ski championship is artificial

by

The lack of snow is a particularly serious problem in Andelboden, Switzerland, which will host the Ski World Cup on Saturday, which usually draws around 25,000 fans.

The Alps are considered a very wintery Christmas destination with Swiss resorts being among the most popular destinations. But this year, travelers have been searching for snow with koalas after New Year’s temperatures in Switzerland even reached 20 degrees Celsius, a record temperature for the Alps in January.

Climate change is now more than visible. Even at 2,000 meters, the temperature was above freezing.

Those who chose the Alps to ski were disappointed as what they saw for the most part was mud and grass. In many cases, outside intervention was needed, with those responsible placing artificial snow on the famous slopes, according to the BBC.

At the same time, the lack of snow is a particularly serious problem in Andelboden, Switzerland, which will host the Ski World Cup on Saturday, which is usually attended by around 25,000 fans. According to course director Tony Handy, the races will be held exclusively on artificial snow this year.

The unusually warm and rainy weather has significantly affected the start of the ski season across the Alps.

Meanwhile, in Austria, resorts around Salzburg last saw snow a month ago. The same in Chamonix in France.

In fact, in Switzerland, some resorts have even opened their summer cycling routes since travelers can’t indulge in their favorite winter sports.

However, experts point out that summer weather in the middle of winter should not be surprising since they have warned that global warming will cause warmer and wetter winters.
