After 8 years, the sanctification of the waters in the Arachthos river, rediscovers that familiar image that Epirotians have from generation to generation
Crowds of people, locals and visitors arrived in the morning at the historic bridge of Plaka. The mood is festive. The Epiphany of 2023, at the monument of Tzoumerka, which was destroyed by the fury of nature on Sunday February 1, 2015 and rebuilt, is the new page in the historical route of the region.
After 8 years, the sanctification of the waters in the Arachthos river, rediscovers that familiar image that Epirotians have from generation to generation.
At 11 o’clock, Pope George Zagelidis went up with the faithful to the cobblestones of the arch of the bridge, for the Consecration ceremony. Some brave men took a position on the river bank and dived into the icy waters of Arachthos to catch the Cross.
In his message, the mayor of Northern Tzoumerko, Yiannis Senteles, wished everyone a happy new year and emphasized that in addition to the religious dimension of the day, there is also a historical one. He characteristically emphasized that “in this historic place, this celebration always has a symbolic character. It symbolizes the struggle of the residents in every challenge, but also the joint effort and cooperation of all agencies, for the restoration of the monument. “Today is fully restored, with cooperation and unity,” he pointed out.
