The 36-year-old was convinced that Amber Heard was looking for a businessman-partner in Greece and gave 6,000 euros
Yesterday, the Three-member Criminal Court of Volos sentenced in absentia two foreign residents of London, who are hiding behind a fraud against a 36-year-old man from Volio, from whom they extorted approximately 6,000 euros, pretending to be a well-known Hollywood actress, who allegedly wanted to invest in Greek islands.
At the trial, after it was established that the two defendants who are of African origin and employees of a telephone company in England, were absent, the victim of the fraud who is Voliotis, then unemployed and today a farmer entrepreneur, testified as a witness.
Voliotis received messages in his e-mail and through FB from employees, allegedly from the American actress and model Amber Heard, that he was allegedly interested in investing in the Greek islands, in hotels and not only, he was looking for a businessman – partner and chose the then 33-year-old man.
The 36-year-old was convinced and although he had no real insight into the intentions of the “actress” – they had written to him that she would soon come to Greece to meet and discuss more about their collaboration – he gave an amount of approximately 6,000 euros (converted into sterling and resulted in the account of three men, two of whom were identified and tried yesterday).
The same circuit has defrauded countless Greeks
When asked by the president of the Court how he was convinced to deposit money and that he was actually talking to representatives of the particular actress, the victim replied that everything happened very quickly, unknown why, he believed that a business opportunity was presented, he deposited the money, but very quickly realized that it was a scam.
He said that the same ring has defrauded a lot of Greeks and added that he had heard about the scams on the internet, but he did not believe that he would become a victim himself.
After depositing the money, suddenly the … “Hollywood star” stopped communicating with him and the 33-year-old realized that it was a scam, as throughout the exchange of messages in the English language, the perpetrators wrote him plausible facts to make him believe that his the actress wrote.
It reached the actress’ agent…
A preliminary investigation had been ordered by the Volos Prosecutor’s Office and the authorities were led to three men, two of whom were identified (Voliotis’ money ended up in their accounts), while a third accomplice who was not identified was also sought.
Voliotis, the victim of fraud, fought hard to get his money back, he contacted and spoke to the relevant authorities in Great Britain and the United States.
He even contacted the actress’s agent, who simply confirmed his fears, telling him on her behalf that she had never intended to set up business in our country and ultimately failed to get his money back.
