They exhausted the imagination of two poachers in Halkidiki, who wasted many hours to masterfully build a wooden improvised device, with two guns, for killing wild boars.
They placed the device inside a Wildlife Refuge in Polygyros of Halkidiki and covered it with burlap and branches, so that it was difficult to notice, while the trap they had set, according to the Hunting Federation of Macedonia Thrace, would fire indiscriminately against whoever would activate it.
“Of course, the most important thing that they did not think about is that at any moment a human life was in danger,” Theofilos Mylopoulos, president of the Macedonian Hunting Federation of Thrace (KOMATH), who contributed to the revelation of the poachers’ action, tells APE-MPE.
Specifically, KOMATH game wardens, based on information they had, identified the device last week and then, the Game Warden Coordinator of the Thessaloniki Halkidiki region, organized a team of six game wardens, who put the area under surveillance.
“For 12 hours they watched and waited for the poachers to appear, which happened after 12 hours, when they went to fill the two guns with cartridges,” says Mr. Mylopoulos. The poachers had, in fact, from the previous day, thrown corn at the point so that the wild boars, stooping down to eat it, would activate the mechanism by firing two carbines at the same time which would kill them.
According to KOMATH, the poachers admitted the violations and handed over all the illegal means to the game wardens, so that the lawsuit could then be filed with the Forestry Service.
“It is rare to see such a device with two weapons, and even inside a Wildlife Sanctuary, where hunting is prohibited,” Mr. Mylopoulos emphasizes, adding that “the imagination of poachers in other incidents also runs wild as they can even set up “talismans” on trees so they can lie undisturbed to hunt illegally.”
“The most important thing,” he concludes, “is that the arrest was made in time because this mechanism was not easily visible to the untrained eye and there was a risk that any person passing by could activate the mechanism with their foot.”
