Mallards, whistlings, mallards, white-fronted geese, teal and black ducks enjoy the care of volunteers
The colony of rare waterfowl in the “port” of Aitolikos is a small, unique habitat in the heart of the lagoon.
Aitoliko is connected to the mainland by two bridges. Its inhabitants have a tradition of shipbuilding and fishing. It is located in a great ecosystem, which is a refuge for more than 250 different species of birds among which many are rare and endangered.
The “port” is a creation of the voluntary cooperation and work of a group of young people who live on the beautiful island of the Messolonghi-Aitolikos lagoon and have ambitions for their place.
APE-MPE met Lambros Harelos and Stratos Barouhous along with other volunteers in the water “state”. Small wooden houses, feeders, bridges, information signs, crystal clear waters, colorful birds, all in harmony, in the calm natural landscape, make the beautiful wildlife colony.
Mallards, whistlings, mallards, white-fronted geese, teal and black ducks enjoy the care of the volunteers.
“We saw the period of the pandemic as an opportunity to make use of the fishermen’s harbor that was “sinking” in garbage and the remains of wooden fishing boats and boats. First we cleaned the seabed”, says Lambros to APE-MPE and enthusiastically shows us dozens of silver pelicans appearing at the entrance from the small port.
The sight is spectacular. As he explains, the silver pelicans follow a flock of anchovies that entered the lagoon and squeezed into the small harbor. Silver pelicans are a protected species and are endemic to clear waters and calm ecosystems.
“We are trying to sensitize all citizens, especially young people. Here was once a field of activity for poachers. Today, fortunately, the phenomenon has decreased significantly. Poaching stopped, hunting noises stopped and silver pelicans appeared, which are an endangered species. In the harbor we really managed to create a beautiful and quiet colony of waterfowl with respect for the environment, nature”, they point out.
