Giant squid are known to live near the coast of Japan and sometimes some wash up on its shores
Two Japanese divers recently managed to capture rare images of a 2.5m giant squid swimming off the west coast of the Japanese archipelago and described the experience as “exciting”.

“There it was, a huge squid,” Tanaka recounted. “It didn’t have the agility of many fish and sea creatures,” he added. “His tentacles and fins were moving very slowly.”
The squid looked weak and its skin appeared to be peeling off in places, the diver observed.
The size of the squid and its huge eyes were shocking, and Tanaka said that seeing it made him imagine how strong a squid must be to attack a whale.
“I could see his tentacles moving. I thought it would be dangerous to be caught and carried away by this creature,” he continued.
Giant squid are known to live near the coast of Japan and sometimes some wash up on its shores, but it is very rare to see them swimming in the sea.
“It was exciting. I think few things are rarer than this sight,” Tanaka said, adding: “I hear we don’t know much about this creature. I would be happy if this helps us learn more.”
