Eva Kaili insisted on her initial line that she is innocent while her lawyers alleged torture and medieval detention conditions – She can appeal the decision within 24 hours
For at least one more month he will remain in prison Eva Kaili as decided by the pre-trial council in Brussels. She herself, who appeared at the authorities in handcuffs, visibly emaciated and in a bad psychological state, insisted on her innocence, while her lawyers spoke of inhumane treatment by the Belgian authorities.
Eva Kaili can file an appeal against the decision within 24 hours and be judged in the next fifteen days.
According to information from SKAI, when the procedure began, they removed her handcuffs, which were put back on her when it was finished. Ms. Kaili spoke in Greek for about 10 minutes with the help of an interpreter after her 2 lawyers had first been positioned.
“I kept my distance from Giorgi’s activities”
In her deposition Ms. Kaili talked about almost everything. She pleaded not guilty and that she has nothing to do with her partner’s activities, which she said she pays for.
She broke down when she spoke about her daughter – ‘I want my daughter in the cell’
However, she also spoke about her child whom she cannot see and at this point she reportedly folded. Almost 2-3 times she started crying during her placement and especially when referring to her child. She asked the judges to let her have it with her either in or out of jail which is not provided for. At the moment Ms. Kaili has the right to see her child twice a month.
The rationale of the members of the pre-trial council for her stay in prison
According to a SKAI report, two of the three members of the pre-trial council suggested that Ms. Kaili should not be released, stressing that there are reasons why Eva Kaili should remain in prison. Specifically, they referred to the fact that she is considered a suspected fugitive because she is Greek and could possibly leave the country. She is considered suspect for collusion even with third parties who may be outside and will hide or destroy evidence, but also suspect for altering evidence in the case file. Even Pantseri’s decision – to which Ms. Kaili did not mention at all – to cooperate with the authorities played an important role. His secret hearings will start on Tuesday and since then the authorities believe that the tangle of the Qatargate case will be unraveled
“I will always say that Ms. Kaili is innocent,” said her lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos. “Mrs. Eva Kaili was extremely clear. She denies all accusations of corruption on her part” added Mr. Andre Rizopoulos.
Mrs. Kaili did not enter through the official entrance in order not to be noticed. “Eva Kaili had no cooperation with Mr. Pantseri,” underlined Mr. Dimitrakopoulos.
Two measures and two stations, torture and medieval conditions of detention, her lawyers complain
Her hearing, which began at 12.05 Brussels time, lasted about an hour and a half. The Greek lawyer told her that he is not optimistic and referred to the torture that Eva Kaili suffered in the previous days. He spent 16 hours in solitary confinement, he said during police interrogations.
“They refused to give her a second blanket, they took her coat. This is torture. The light was constantly on and he couldn’t sleep. This is torture. She was sick with a lot of blood and was not allowed to wash. This is torture”, stressed Mr. Dimitrakopoulos.
Eva Kaili insisted on the fact that she is the mother of a 22-month-old child who cannot be left alone while her lawyer Andre Rizopoulos insisted that there can be no double standards as she remains in prison while other MEPs are free and preparing their defensive line.
“And finally he has become the person who has been hurt more painfully and more by a harsh detention while he is not the central person of the investigation”, pointed out the lawyer of Mrs. Rizopoulos.
In particular, Mr. Dimitrakopoulos stated:
“First of all, I want to thank you for your interest in Mrs. Eva Kaili. I will keep saying that Eva Kaili is innocent. Eva Kaili asked me to convey the following to you. Eva Kaili had no professional collaboration with Mr. Pantseri. And now the difficult and sad part: Eva Kaili from Wednesday January 11 to Friday January 13 was in solitary confinement by decision of the investigator. For 16 hours she was in a cell at the Police, not in prison, with a cold, she asked for a second blanket and they didn’t give it to her, they took her coat. This is torture. The light was constantly on, she couldn’t sleep for a minute, she had a very bloody period and was not allowed to wash. This constitutes torture. Eva Kaili is accused but there is always the presumption of innocence, we are in Europe! These acts violate the European Convention on Human Rights, they are torture, they are medieval. Please everyone, make these public, publicity is the soul of justice. I hope for a fair trial, we are in Europe!”
Pancheri is “burning” Tarabela: I paid him up to 140,000 euros
At the same time, the key man of the Qatargate scandal, Pier Antonio Pancheri, “burns” Mark Tarabella first by confessing that he paid him up to 140,000 euros to support Doha’s positions.
“I am reserved and I am not saying anything about the investigation yet, because I will tell the investigators first,” said Mr. Tarabella.
At the same time, the federal prosecutor of Belgium has requested the lifting of the immunity of the Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino. Pancheri made sure to photograph him and Giorgi named him for the Morocco case
There was an agreement that efforts would be made to avoid resolutions against the country and in return he would receive 50,000 euros, Antonio Panzeri said specifically.
Brussels has lost sleep, and rightly so, while Metsola’s move to declare overdue 142 gifts she received due to her position as president of the European Parliament raises questions.
