Gunmen spread fire on Sunday when they opened fire on people who had gathered to celebrate in South Africa, leaving eight dead and three injured, police said today.

“The owner of the house was celebrating his birthday when two unknown armed men entered” the property last Sunday night in Canberra (n.s. south; major port, city formerly known as Port Elizabeth) and “started shooting at of guests,” police described in a press release released.

The gunmen were shooting “indiscriminately” at the guests, the text continues, which clarifies that “eight people are dead and three others are fighting to stay alive in a hospital.”

The owner of the house “is among the deceased”, according to the same source.

The case is being investigated and a manhunt has been launched to arrest the perpetrators, according to the police.

Gun attacks are common in South Africa, which has one of the highest homicide rates in the world due to gang violence and alcohol.

In 2022, there were armed attacks on bars that resulted in the deaths of around twenty people, mainly in working-class districts of Johannesburg and the city of Pietermaritzburg (East).
