“Anniversary” for the first vaccination in Greece-Themistocleous: We avoided 15,000 deaths

by

Today, December 27, marks one year since the start of the vaccination program and the first coronavirus vaccination in our country.

During the scheduled briefing on vaccination coverage, the Secretary General of Primary Health Care, Marios Themistokleous, stressed that 365 days later, more than 17 million vaccinations have been carried out in our country.

He added that 7,415,000 (70.6%) citizens have been vaccinated with the first dose, 7 million people (66.4%) have been vaccinated with the two doses, while 4,365,000 citizens have also received the booster dose (75, 6%).

The most important number of the year, as the secretary general pointed out, is that based on research for our country, the vaccination prevented more than 15 thousand deaths due to the coronavirus.

Greece was the first in the European Union to open the possibility of vaccinating a booster dose at 18 and over and adopted the three months as an interval between 2nd and 3rd dose. He applied compulsory vaccination to citizens over 60 years of age, before the arrival of the “Omicron” mutation. He has implemented the vaccination program at home and more than 40,000 vaccinations have already been performed. More than 300 mobile units on a daily basis vaccinate citizens in remote areas.

The vaccination program, said Mr. Themistocleous, was based on three pillars: the quality of services provided, the creation of a fully digitized system and safety in the process and implementation of vaccinations.
