In mid-January, the 18th and last train of the initial contract for the main line of the Thessaloniki Metro is received, while a tender of 142 million euros was announced for the supply of an additional 15 new trains, for the expansion of Kalamaria and for the thickening of routes on the main line. , so that the time distances between itineraries do not exceed 1.5 ‘of the hour.
The Metro has opened speed in the execution of the works, with the aim of putting it into commercial operation by the end of 2023, while gradually the citizens are beginning to notice the progress that is being made in the project, in the ground parts of the construction squats.
Thus, after the restoration of Agias Sofias Street in the section from Egnatia to Ag. Sofias, on Christmas Eve, at the end of January 2022, will be restored on a two-way street, on October 26, in the section from the junction with the Polytechnic to Republic Square.
With the works completed on the ground level of the Democracy Station, all that remains is the restoration of traffic on October 26, a road extremely congested due to heavy traffic and illegal parking, especially at the main entrance of the Courthouse.
The competition for new trains
Christmas Eve Attiko Metro SA launched the big tender of 142 million euros before VAT, for the “Supply of Rolling Stock for the Thessaloniki metro and its extension to Kalamaria”.
The object of the contract is the design, construction, supply and commissioning of 15 new trains, of which 6 for the needs of the main project of the Thessaloniki Metro and 9 for the needs of its expansion to Kalamaria. The contract will last 910 days (2.5 years) and bids or applications must be submitted by 11 a.m. of January 26, 2022. The unsealing will be done electronically, on 1/2/2022.
The trains will operate automatically without a driver (Gradeof-Automation 4 GoA4), according to IEC 62290-1. The trains will be physically and functionally compatible with the existing Thessaloniki Metro system, ie with the Basic Project, the extension to Kalamaria, the Pylaia Depot with the existing Rolling Stock Maintenance equipment as well as with the existing rolling stock.
It is noted that the first 18 trains of the Thessaloniki Metro have been built by Hitachi Rail (formerly Ansaldo STS), a subsidiary of Hitachi, which is also a member of the contractor of the Metro Main Line.
The participation of Hitachi Rail in the new tender of 142 million euros must be considered certain, while the participation of other companies that build trains with the same characteristics (eg Siemens) is possible.
The Thessaloniki Metro will use automatic, driverless, four-legged four-car train cars about 51 meters long. Each train will have a capacity of 450 passengers.
The contract, for the supply of the 15 new trains, will be financed within the framework of the NSRF 2014-2020, through the Operational Program “Infrastructure, Transport, Environment and Sustainable Development” (OP-YMEPERAA) and by the co-financed part of the PD. Ε.
The PPP for operation and maintenance
In the meantime, the announcement of the international tender of the large PPP is expected, which will concern the conclusion of a contract for the Operation and Maintenance of the Thessaloniki Metro, a project with which, for the first time in Greece, an individual will operate a fixed track network.
As it is known, the consultants for the preparation of the tender – financial and legal – have been selected, while the tender documents are in the completion phase. One of the critical issues in the preparation of the tender is the amount of the fare subsidy as well as the coverage of travel in the combined transport system, which Thessaloniki should have when the Metro operates.
This contract can not exceed 15 years.
Meanwhile, the works at the Venizelos Station continue, for the temporary posting of the antiquities, as the decision of the CoC on the request for suspension of the posting works that was discussed on 23/11/2021 has not been published yet.
