Initiatives are being developed in almost every part of Greece to collect essential items and support agencies acting on the front line to relieve the Turks and Syrians who are facing the consequences of last Monday’s deadly earthquake.
As announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the coordination of the agencies for the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected areas of Turkey and Syria has been undertaken by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andreas Katsaniotis.
In addition, by order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias, the Crisis Management Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been activated for any necessary assistance to Greek citizens in the affected areas. Indicatively, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that the items collected are clothing for all ages, non-perishable food for adults, toddlers and infants, blankets, tents and medical supplies.
As expected, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees is already in the field and offers tents, blankets and personal hygiene items while inviting the citizens of Greece to contribute in kind or with money through its website (https://donate.unhcr.org/gr/el/turkiye- syria-earthquake-emergency), which is completely safe.
On Friday morning, his first humanitarian mission left Hellenic Red Cross with three trucks and a rescue vehicle, which will arrive in Gaziantep, Turkey, where, in coordination with the Turkish Red Crescent, around 40 tons of humanitarian aid will be delivered to provide immediate relief to people struggling to survive in the rubble of a lifetime.
Already in the first hours when the extent of the disaster became known, municipalities, international organizations active in our country and non-governmental organizations, the church and citizen collectives responded to the universal call to contribute to those who are suffering.
The Municipality of Athens immediately announced the collection of items in order to meet the urgent needs of the tens of thousands displaced by the deadly earthquake.
A similar initiative was taken by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, but also by the municipalities of Agios Anargyro-Kamaterou, Alimos, Acharna, Dionysos, Hellinikon-Argyroupoli, Ilioupoli, Ilio, Kaisariani, Kifissia, Kropia, Lykovrysi-Pefki, Megarea, Nea Smyrna, Paiana, Palaio Faliro. , Penteli, Peristeriou, Rafina-Pikermiou, Spaton-Artemida, Filothei-Psychikou, Chaidariou. Furthermore, the Church of Greece proceeds with the collection of humanitarian aid from Sunday 12th to Sunday 19th February, asking the faithful to contribute new blankets and quilts, bottled water, long-life milk, pasta, rice and pulses. However, solidarity knows no borders, so the Archdiocese of America and the Greek diaspora are collecting money for the earthquake victims.
As Archbishop of America Elpidophoros stated, “the goal of the Relief Fund of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese is to help both the immediate needs and the long-term consequences of the disasters caused by the deadly earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Our Archdiocese will work with the International Humanitarian Organization International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) to identify reliable organizations to distribute aid.”
The “Doctors of the World” in cooperation with “Solidarity for All” they also collect basic clothing and food items for the Turkish, Kurdish and Syrian people. Teams of the international network of Doctors of the World are also already in both regions that have suffered mainly from the consequences of the earthquake, providing assistance to the tens of thousands of injured, who, unfortunately, are estimated to exceed 100 thousand.
