Papaevangelou: The incubation time of Omicron is shorter – The most common symptoms

by

Vana Papaevangelos, professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Committee of Experts, spoke today about the spread of the Omicron mutation and its characteristics that make it different from the other mutant strains of the coronavirus.

According to the professor, it seems that based on the data so far, the incubation time (the period between exposure to the virus and the onset of symptoms) of Omicron is shorter, while the duration of the disease is shorter.

At the same time, he stressed that the Omicron variant also differs in the clinical picture since it manifests more often with:

  • Catarrh
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throat

More rarely, said the professor, patients show cough, high fever and loss of taste-smell. “We recommend that the symptoms of the common cold not be ignored and that a self-diagnostic or laboratory test be performed immediately,” said Ms. Papaevangelou.

Regarding the protection of vaccines against mutation, he clarified that those who have been fully vaccinated, in three doses, are confirmed by the data that they are protected from the serious disease and stressed that vaccination is more than ever a one-way street, as he stated that vaccinated people have almost 100% chance to get stuck: “Those who are not vaccinated with the mobility of the day and with the transmission of Omicron have almost 100% chance of getting stuck”.

In any case, the teacher recommended attention to family contacts during the holidays, regardless of vaccination, and stressed that an antigen test be performed before an outing.

He also said that it makes no sense for fully vaccinated people to confirm a positive rapid test with a pcr, “this is for those who are not vaccinated for the first time and want to issue a certificate of illness,” he explained.
