At the same time, the Ministry of Culture and the police department of Mytilini have been informed so that those responsible can be identified
Complaint against unknowns, she testified Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesvos in the Prosecution of First Instance of Mytilene about the situation that prevails in the surrounding area of the Ancient Theater which has been turned into a garbage dump.
In a statement it issued, on the occasion of publications about the disappointing image presented by the archaeological site, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesvos notes that it has informed the central service of the Ministry of Culture and the police department of Mytilini so that those responsible can be identified.
In addition, it informs that it is proceeding to parking lot fencing, which, as he states, “until now had been deliberately left open, to facilitate the entry, exit and parking of the vehicles of visitors to the archaeological site”.
According to the announcement “It is not the first time that strangers illegally enter the specific area and discard all kinds of useless material, altering the image of the area by creating an image of abandonment of the monument. The result of these illegal actions is the pollution and consequently the indirect damage of the archaeological site of the “Ancient Theater” of Mytilene, an emblematic monument of the Hellenistic and Roman era for the city, in violation of article 10, par. 1 of the law. 4858/2021 “Ratification of the Code of legislation for the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage in general” (Government Gazette 220/A/19-11-2021)”.
Still reminds how “the highlighting of the archaeological site and especially the configuration of the parking area, where the waste materials were discarded, were completed in 2015, within the framework of the Action “Unification of the Archaeological Sites of the City of Mytilene” with funding from the NSRF 2000-2015, satisfying a fixed request of the citizens of Mytilene for the implementation of cultural events in the area. In recent years, in fact, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesbos, in collaboration with the Polytechnic School of Bari, Italy, has carried out excavation research in the passages of the theater, during which it was revealed Sanctuary of Nemeses.
It seems, therefore, that the ancient theater of Mytilene, which caused the admiration of Pompey when he visited our city in the 1st century. BC, leaves unmoved those who systematically pollute the surrounding area of the monument.
We sincerely thank Mr. Dimitrios Karavatakis for his conscientiousness and informing the newspapers about the relevant event”
