After a dispute of 25 years, a solution was found for the schools of Maraslei – one of the most historic school complexes in the country
For a full 25 years, the schools of Maraslei – one of the most historic school complexes in the country – were the subject of a dispute between the Municipality of Athens and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), as it was impossible for them to agree neither to whom they belong nor who has the their competence.
The dispute, which was taken to the courts, even reaching the extreme point of questioning the stay of the schools, was resolved with the landmark agreement between the municipality of Athens and the EKPA, effectively satisfying a standing request of the educational community.
Now, with this agreement, the way is opened for the smooth maintenance, systematic restoration and promotion of the school buildings that are distinguished for their great architectural value and have been hosted in the Maraslio Didaskalio since 1905.
The joint initiative for today’s agreement between the Municipality and EKPA was undertaken by the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis and the rector of EKPA, Thanos Dimopoulos.
Through this, the problem that reflected in the housing and the operation of the schools of the municipality of Athens is solved for the benefit of the students and the educational community: The 26th Experimental Gymnasium, the 26th Lyceum of Athens, as well as the three Experimental Primary Schools and the 10th Special School.
Through the Agreement, the uninterrupted housing of the 26th Experimental Gymnasium and 26th Lyceum is ensured, for which the municipality of Athens will now pay the EKPA a monthly rent.
At the same time, for the three Experimental Primary Schools and the 10th Special Primary School located in the same area, their operation continues without any change to the existing regime.
In his statement, the mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, emphasized: “Finally an end to a decades-long dispute. Students, teachers, professors and parents can now feel safe about their school. A big thank you to the rector of EKPA, Mr. Thanos Dimopoulos for the essential cooperation and to the educational community for the support”.
