Mining is an activity that contributes decisively to the development of societies and the advancement of technologies. However, it is requested that the utilization of natural resources is done with effective protection and respect for the natural environment.
Greek Gold, the company that implements one of the largest foreign direct investments in Greece, is moving in this direction. To date, the investment in Kassandra Mines has contributed more than 1 billion euros to the domestic economy, while at the same time the company is one of the largest employers in Northern Greece and actively supports Greek businesses at the local and national level.

Hellas Gold | Parallel environmental restoration in practice

Best practices for environmental management

By assuming responsibility for the operation of the Kassandra Mines, Greek Gold committed itself to the restoration of the areas, within and around the mines, that are affected by the mining activity. For this purpose, it implements the Parallel Restoration in practice, implementing work to clean up and restore the land to its former natural state where the mining activity is completed.

At the same time, from the very first day, it carries out one of the largest environmental restoration projects of areas from previous mining activity of other owners. To date it has progressed to restoration of the area from 3 million tons of mining waste giving a solution to a chronic problem that posed environmental risks for the region. In fact, one of these “historic tailings sites” has given way to one of the largest nurseries in Europe, which is home to 1,000,000 plants of endemic and local species, which will be used in the restoration projects throughout the development of the project.

It is worth noting that in the state-of-the-art Skourion mine, the mining residues, through the technology of stone filling, another innovative and sustainable environmental practice, will be reused together with other sterile materials, to fill both the underground galleries and the open trench.

In this way, restoration and mining will proceed simultaneously so that the land returns to its natural state almost simultaneously with the end of the mining activity, creating a positive legacy for the next generations of Northeast Halkidiki.
