“This would not have happened if the security systems were working,” said Mr. Genidounias
“It was a head-on collision, the two trains were moving on the same line in the opposite direction,” said the president of the train drivers, Kostas Genidounias, speaking to SKAI, referring to the fatal accident after the collision of the two trains in Tempi.
He explained that the trains enter the line with an order given by the manager and added that “no electronic system works, everything is done manually on the biggest part of the line”.
He noted that there is a double track and one train entered the other track.
“This would not have happened if the safety systems were working. The systems exist and do not work, they have been installed since 2000, they were in the phase of withdrawal, we have denounced it dozens of times” said Mr. Genidounias.
Explaining the mode of operation, he said that “the stationmaster gives us an order and says ‘leave station a and go to station b’, then station b’ sees us and informs station a’ that we have arrived”.
The communication is done via wireless, he characteristically said and added that “it’s like driving around in a car and the traffic lights don’t work. It’s unthinkable, it can’t be happening.”
Finally, he said that “the infrastructure belongs to the OSE, the one who gives the orders is the OSE, the orders are transferred from station master to station master”.
