The tragic death toll from the train collision in Tempe rose to 36, as announced shortly after 9:30 in the morning. As the Fire Department’s press representative, fire chief Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, said in the latest update, the rescuers’ efforts are focused on the first three wagons.

“The search operation to locate trapped people at the scene of the train accident at the entrance to the Tempe Valley remains ongoing. All the actions of the firefighters operating at the scene are focused on the first 3 carriages of the passenger train. Crane-carrying vehicles create the conditions for access and full control inside the wagons.

The confirmed death toll currently stands at 36. While 66 are being treated for injuries. 60 in simple beds and 6 in Intensive Care Units.

150 firefighters, including EMAK and the special forest operations team, are operating at the scene, with 17 vehicles and 4 cranes, while the EKAB continues to assist with 30 ambulances,” the latest update said.

For her part, the press representative of ELAS, Constantia Dimoglidou, emphasized that for the tragic train accident, police officers from the Larissa Police Department have been deployed, while a team from the Criminal Investigation Department of Athens and Thessaloniki has been dispatched to assist the local police authorities.

The process of identifying and identifying the victims continues at the Larissa General Hospital in the presence of officers and specialist psychologists of the Greek Police.
