The number of confirmed dead who have been recovered so far from the wreckage of a passenger train that collided with a commercial one, in the area of ​​Evangelismos, near Tempi, is 46, late on Tuesday evening, as stated in an official press release by the Fire Department’s press representative, fire chief, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis.

As Mr. Vathrakogiannis said, the investigation and extrication operation at the scene of the railway accident continues today.

The efforts of the fire-fighting forces are at this time concentrated on the restaurant car, which, owing to the severity of the collision, had been crushed by the first car of the second place.

The passenger car on top is being removed, and then the compressed and “C”-shaped restaurant car will be removed.

A total of 7 charred bodies have been recovered from this particular wagon this morning.

The confirmed death toll at this time is 46.

To continue the search and rescue operation, metal cutting with special machines and partial removal of their metal elements will have to be done.

It is estimated that by noon the removal of the wagon in question will be completed. For the rest, it will be necessary to continue the operation until tomorrow.

The conditions under which the forces operate are difficult, while it rains from time to time.

It is recalled that rooms have been allocated in hotels in the area of ​​Larissa, for the relatives of the victims and the injured, as has been announced.

Investigations are ongoing

The crews are trying to dismember the third car of the train that crashed in Tempe, so that it can share its weight and move, as that is where the search for passengers is focused from now on.

With the help of crane vehicles, special teams continue to operate in parallel on the first two wagons which have become an amorphous mass of ironwork and have been completely burned. Everything is done with great care because of the danger of the situation and the large volume of wagons.

The rescuers and EMAK teams, step by step, investigate every nook and cranny of the wagons and look for passages to be able to enter all the points.
