The European ESTIA program offering short-term accommodation to asylum seekers in Greek cities is coming to an end
The European program ESTIA that offers short-term accommodation to asylum seekers in Greek cities is coming to an end and there is concern on refugee accommodation.
Based on the decision of the Greek authorities, the 4 children shown in the video will have to move to a refugee center.
Their mother Karin, a refugee from the Congo, is desperate. Until recently she was granted an apartment in Athens through the European ESTIA program. At the end of 2022, Greece stopped the program and so the family of five will have to leave their home. Life is hard. The family gets by only with families from private initiatives. However, Karin is sure that she does not want to go back to the refugee center. “It’s like a prison there. You’re just there. You pretend to be free. But there is no freedom there. Everything is checked. I do not want it. I don’t want this for my children,” she says.
As of 2021, refugee camps in mainland Greece are surrounded by high walls and are often located far from cities. Input and output are time limited and digitally recorded.
After the ESTIA program ended some people without financial resources began to live in warehouse-like containers instead of houses in the city. For the Greek authorities this is the best solution.
