A 20-minute delay probably avoided a collision between two passenger trains at Tempe. According to statements to SKAI by a train driver of the commuter train, its route was delayed, as a result of which it fell behind the commercial train, which collided head-on with the Intercity. He, however, emphasized that there is also the possibility that, if this delay had not occurred, the fatal accident would not have even occurred.

As pointed out by Michalis Bagiotisdriver of a suburban train that started from Thessaloniki to Larissa on the fateful Tuesday night, “we left Thessaloniki 20 minutes late, with the result that the commercial train with which the accident happened was in front of us”.

“Because this train was in front, the station master kept us at the Litochoro station, as a result of which this train went ahead” added Mr. Bagiotis.

“Obviously if the delay had not happened we would have had priority, we would have been in the place of the commercial train, maybe we would have caught up, because logically the commercial train would have kept it at the previous station, that is in Plati, maybe the collision would have been avoided he pointed out.

“We were 50 to 55 people” explained the driver.

It is a sinful story, which, it seems, will now concern the Justice Department in the shadow of the Tempe tragedy.

According to the SKAI TV report, the nearly ten-year delay in the implementation of the maintenance contract for the signaling and remote control system has left the country’s railway network without safety barriers. The result is tragic…
