In the multinational exercise of the French Armed Forces named “Orion 2023” the Greek Armed Forces participated from February 22 until yesterday, Tuesday March 7, with the “Adrias” frigate.

The exercise took place in the wider maritime area of ​​the Central and Western Mediterranean, with the participation of naval units from Germany, Greece, the United Kingdom, the USA, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.

The purpose of the exercise was to prepare for the execution of operations and to increase the readiness of the Armed Forces of the participating countries within the framework of the Alliance, and was based on the examination of a scenario concerning in destabilizing a hypothetical allied country, due to military and hybrid offensive actions of a neighboring country. In application of Article 5 of the founding treaty of NATO, which concerns collective defense and the relevant UN resolution, the deployment of the Alliance’s forces followed in order to make it possible to deal with the irregular situation and to ensure the territorial integrity of the allied country.

“Orion 2023” is a continuation of the “Polaris” exercise, which was organized in 2021 by the French Armed Forces and during which complex interdisciplinary operational scenarios of operations were implemented in multiple sectors and fields of conflict.

The frigate “Adrias” participated in the areas of joint surface and air operational picture synthesis, forward maneuvers, surface warfare, as well as the acquisition and maintenance of sea control in the context of amphibious operations.

On March 2, the exercise’s Distinguished Visitors Day took place on board the amphibious operations command ship “FS Tonnerre” and was attended by the Chief of the French Defense Staff, General Thierry Burkhard, the heads of the three branches of the French Armed Forces, the heads of the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia, the defense attachés of the participating countries, as well as the defense attaché of Greece in France, Commander (I) Konstantinos Karavitis as a representative of the head of the Greek Armed Forces, General Konstantinos Floros.
