The trees planted in the main street of the city were attacked by the so-called “elm beetle”
The administration of the municipality of Thessaloniki is proceeding with the replacement of the diseased and dangerous trees on Tsimiski street, with the interventions starting very immediately.
The trees planted in the main street of the city were attacked by the so-called “elm beetle”, a leaf-eating insect whose larvae skeletonize the leaves, resulting in a decrease in photosynthetic capacity.
this particular leaf-eating insect also created serious problems for the trees themselves, drying them and leaving signs of advanced rot on trunks and arms, as a result of which major issues were raised for the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles.
The sick and dangerous trees will be replaced with new ones, as 163 new trees of the celtida species, aged 10-12 years, are planned to be placed in the next period on the Tsimiski axis.
The choice of this specific species was made, as the keltids are not attacked by the beetle, while at the same time they grow exceptionally well in the environmental conditions of Thessaloniki and show very good stability and a rich crown. Already in the past, 81 elm trees were replaced with the corresponding celtids on the axis of Tsimiski.
