The liberating Struggle and the memory of the heroes of the Greek Revolution are being honored today by all the municipalities of Attica, with parades and events during the three days. After the pandemic and two years of restrictive measures, municipalities have returned to the normality of national celebrations.

From the beginning of the week, the cities were “dressed” in blue and white, after each municipal Authority made a general flag decoration of the streets, squares and municipal buildings. The masters of ceremonies were appointed by the mayors and the full program of events was announced, which began today at dawn with the joyful ringing of bells in all the churches, as the Annunciation of the Virgin is also celebrated.

After the official doxology in the Holy Temples, there will follow the laying of wreaths on the monuments of each municipality, the solemn speeches of the mayors and local authorities and the playing of the National Anthem.

The events culminate with the parades of apprentice youth, scouts, local and sports clubs, which are scheduled at 11 and in some cities at 12 noon. In some municipalities, such as Nea Philadelphia-Nea Chalkidona, Kallithea, Moschatos-Tauros, Papagos-Cholargos, Kifissia and Paania, events with traditional dances by dance groups or schools have also been planned.

However, during the weekend in several municipalities there will also be special events. The municipality of Agios Dimitrios is hosting a photo exhibition by Ilias Pergantis entitled “1821” at the City Hall, where through photographs representing different historical events of the Greek Revolution in various regions of Greece, visitors have the opportunity to relive well-known historical events in a photo-realistic way and traditional customs of the period before and after 1821, as well as the liberation from the Ottoman yoke.

The photographer collaborated with dozens of Cultural Associations across the country and with historical revival groups. The exhibition is open to the public and will run until March 31. As part of the anniversary events, the presentation of the book “The Arcadia of the Travelers” by the historian Vassilis Kardasis took place yesterday in the municipality of Agios Dimitrios.

The Municipality of Megareon and the Holy Monastery of Agia Paraskevi Maziou will co-organize tomorrow Sunday at the “Gerania” Museum Center, an event that includes events in an experiential and interactive way, as a “tour” of the people who starred in the Revolution and a historical retrospective with an exhibition of objects and relics .

And the municipality of Markopoulos Mesogaia will hold tomorrow the anniversary event “Dionysios Solomos 1821 – Tribute”, conducted by conductor Andreas Pylarinos and with the participation of a choir. On the occasion of the National Anniversary, the municipality of Palaio Faliro has organized a historic visit to the Battleship Averof and its museum for tomorrow Sunday.

The municipality of Kaisarianis held a special event yesterday on the theme “The contribution of women to the Greek Revolution”, with the speaker of the book author and journalist Eugenia Katoufa and accompanied by a choir and a dance department.

Finally, the municipality of Nea Ionia had a concert entitled “From darkness to freedom”. A choir of traditional and folk songs and a folk traditional orchestra with singing soloists participated in the concert. Folk songs, as well as songs by modern authors inspired by the national past, were heard, while texts related to the liberating struggle were read.
