According to the Joint Ministerial Decision issued on December 30, valid until January 16, it is stated that in case of a service, worship service, rite, sacrament and any kind of religious ceremony in open spaces, the established precautionary hygiene measures apply avoid transmission of COVID-19 coronavirus. Therefore, where sanctification is performed outdoors the setting will be masks and distances to avoid the spread of coronavirus.
Majorkinis: The unvaccinated should not go to the Epiphany celebrations
The Assistant Professor of Medicine of Athens, and member of the Committee, Gikas Majorkinis, appealed for masks and protection measures regarding the celebration of the Epiphany.
“All the mass gatherings concern us, the citizens should follow the procedures we have said: Masks, distances and chef tests before going to these events”, stressed Mr. Majorkinis.
At the same time, he stressed that it would be better for the unvaccinated not to be present at these events.
Mr. Majorkinis also referred to the deterioration of the epidemiological situation both in Greece and in the rest of the world and especially in Europe.
The Cross will normally fall into the water to sanctify the waters but measures must be taken to limit the spread.
More specifically, attendees should keep a distance of 1.5 meters between them and wear the necessary protective masks. At the same time, holy communion is forbidden in homes and shops. Of course, the ceremonies will take place in the temples as well.
As the government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou pointed out, the vaccinated believers come to the churches with a vaccination certificate while the unvaccinated ones with a negative rapid. “For the ceremony of sanctification of the waters outside, the distances of 1.5 meters and the obligatory use of a double mask or a mask of high protection will be observed,” he stressed.

In the same direction and the Synod with a circular points out that the feast of the Epiphanies will be held with the following measures:
- The Sanctification of the Waters will be performed in compliance with the sanitary measures.

- Instead, the faithful will be able, on the eve and on the eponymous day of the Epiphany, to receive the Great Sanctification from the Holy Temple of their Parish, where, with the care of the Pastors, vials will be placed “for the sanctification of houses”.
Epiphany without throwing a cross in Ioannina
The sanctification of the waters will not take place by throwing a Cross in Lake Ioannina, by decision of Metropolitan Maximos due to the pandemic and the increased epidemiological burden in the area. “We must not go to the Lake to protect our brothers and ourselves,” said Maximos.
The ceremony of sanctification of the waters on the river Sakuleva is canceled
At the same time, due to the many cases, the water sanctification ceremonies will not take place in places outside the Holy Temples, within the administrative boundaries of the Diocese of Florina, Prespa and Eordaia.
According to the announcement of the Diocese, in addition to the public sanctification ceremonies of the waters that took place on the Sakuleva River, in lakes and reservoirs of villages and towns, the sanctifications performed by the priests in the residences of the faithful are also canceled. The sequences of the sanctification of the waters will take place only within the temples of the Diocese.
Ceremonies are canceled in Municipalities of Epirus
In Epirus, one after the other, the municipalities announce their decisions not to carry out the established water sanctification ceremonies. Specifically in Ioannina, the traditional ceremony will not take place on Lake Pamvotida, as it results from the program of celebration, announced by the Diocese of Ioannina, although there has been no official announcement from the Municipal Authority. In the other Municipalities after the Municipality of Arta, which on Monday announced that the Holy Cross will not be thrown into the waters of Arachthos from the bridge of Arta, yesterday the Municipality of North Tzoumerka announced that the established ceremony of sanctification of the waters and the throwing of the Holy Stavrou from the Plaka Bridge will not be carried out, while the decision not to hold the throwing of the Holy Cross in the port of Igoumenitsa during the Epiphany this year.
