He is reportedly expected to claim that his schedule ended at 23:00 and even though he left earlier the tragedy could not have been avoided as the train arrived at Larissa station a few minutes after 23:00 at around 23:02
The cycle of apologies continues for the tragedy in Tempi, where 57 people died a horrible death, with the other, older and more experienced station master who had a shift on the afternoon of February 28 passing today, Tuesday 3/28, the threshold of the special appeals investigator handling the case .
He is reportedly expected to claim that his schedule ended at 23:00 and even though he left earlier it could not have been avoided as the train arrived at Larissa station a few minutes after 23:00 at around 23:02 .
Yesterday the contracted station master, after his confession he was released on bail and with the restrictive conditions of appearing at a police station twice a month and of being prohibited from leaving the country. The 33-year-old defendant, after the tragedy in Tempi, claimed, according to information from ERT, that: “I was an accessory, I did not have the responsibility and the first role in the movement of trains.”
The defendant contract stationmaster insisted that his hours were 8 hours, which was in accordance with a verbal agreement with his supervisor, as under the contract he could not be paid overtime and that his shift ended at 10 p.m. In fact, he mentioned that, if he had known that he needed to stay longer, he would have done so.
Earlier, two other contracted station masters, who started working from February 1, also testified to the special appellant investigator, in order to explain from their side how the shifts were organized in practice.
And in particular
- What were their hours?
- What were their shifts?
- In which stations did they work apart from the one in Larissa
- What were their exact duties
On March 30, he is expected to apologize with an 80-page memorandum, according to information, Mr OSE inspector, who was also responsible for shifts and who was at which station and how many hours they worked and what duties they had. He has argued that according to the shift list that had been drawn up, both afternoon station masters had to be on duty until 11 pm.
He denies the accusations attributed to him, while in everything to do with the sick leave he took the day after the accident, according to his lawyer, it has nothing to do with the accusation attributed, as it was made later and after he has given three statements as a witness to the Larissa traffic police and voluntarily to the criminal investigation officer.
It is recalled that all of them are charged with felony obstruction of traffic, manslaughter and aggravated assault.
In a well guarded area the remains of the wagons until the investigation is completed
According to information from ERT, the special appellate investigator has requested the carriages of the two fatal trains to be moved to a well-guarded area, possibly also to a camp, until the experts’ investigation is completed.
It should be noted that the investigation of the appellant investigator is conducted at multiple levels, he has requested many expert opinions, he insists on various elements of the case. One of those elements is for example what caused the fire. There are experts, specialist chemists who are taking samples and doing analyzes to see what exactly caused this fire, which was fatal to a large number of victims, and there is also an investigation into the girl who is still missing evidence is found and it can be identified even at such a later time.
