The Municipality of Chania is proceeding with the implementation of a program to provide, free of charge, sterilisations of domesticated pets, for owners who belong to susceptible and sensitive social groups, as announced today in the context of a press conference on the occasion of World Stray Animals Day.

At the same time, actions were announced that are being implemented and will be implemented and concern the care of companion animals and the awareness of the children of the schools of the Municipality of Chania.

As the mayor of Chania Panagiotis Simandirakis pointed out, in the previous 3.5 years the funding to cover the entire management of stray animals quadrupled.

As he said, this resulted in the multiplication of the number of sterilisations, but also the number of sponsors.

At the same time, he announced that by the end of 2023 the construction of the new animal shelter of the Municipality of Chania in the Akrotiri area will have started.

For his part, the Deputy Mayor of Local Economy and Development, Yiannis Nikiforakis, referred in detail to the original actions, which include:

Free sterilizations for dominant pets.

Informative visits to primary schools of the Municipality of Chania, together with information material and participation of volunteers.

Participation of veterinarians of the Municipality of Chania in a voluntary sterilization program for stray pets (total: 18 pets) and additional supply of feeders-waterers for stray pets and placing them in 24 new places throughout the Municipality of Chania.

According to Mr. Nikiforakis, in recent years the municipality has managed approximately 1,500 animals, performed approximately 1,000 sterilizations, while the costs for the protection of strays reach a total of 500,000 euros.
