“They killed him because they didn’t like what he wrote and maybe they were afraid of what he would write. It is clear why they murdered Giorgos”, states his widow Giorgos KaraivazStatha Alexandropoulou and adds:

“I take it for granted that George’s murder will also be solved, I give credit to the Greek officers, I take it for granted that it will be solved.”

It was midday on April 9, 2021 when journalist Giorgos Karaivaz fell dead from the bullets of paid assassins, outside his house in Alimos. Two years later, the murder that shocked all of Greece remains unsolved.

“It’s more difficult days when he’s close because what comes to mind is life before this event, so these days are much more difficult, it’s something like a birthday on the contrary,” states the journalist’s widow, noting that ” the day George was killed, he was coming to take his first ride in Dimitris’ car, to show the child his new car”.

As she says, “there is no longer the security we had when we had Giorgos, we had a security, both I and the child felt something taken for granted, things were in a flow, now all that has been turned upside down”.

Journalist’s question: Do you think that the reason why he was killed was because of his professional status, that he was killed because he was a journalist?

“Georgos was not with anyone personally, it is clear that it is because of his professional activity and with the police that I have spoken to, they consider that to be the case”, replies the widow of Giorgos Karaivaz.

Statha Alexandropoulou clarifies that her husband had not received any threats before his murder, but his behavior did not indicate that anything strange was going on.

“A month ago the roommate from the first floor who smokes and has small children and smokes on the balcony saw a short dark man who was behind the jeep and then she followed him and saw that he was also towards our bells and when his I said it, some cleftron tells me it will be. There was nothing that concerned him, he was not afraid of anything,” says Mrs. Alexandropoulou.

We asked the widow of Giorgos Karaivaz if the journalist’s contacts with organized crime sources could have been what armed the hand of his killers.

“Georgos had never hidden that he had contacts from all over the place, he had contacts with both criminal and police officers, he also had contacts with lawyers, he had contacts wherever he could, in order to get his report out, that’s a given.” states the journalist’s widow and adds:
“George has left a very good debt-ridden, over-indebted family so if George was involved with the mafia the only thing he wouldn’t have is we wouldn’t be in debt.”

She believes that for the police and the Ministry of Citizen Protection, solving her husband’s murder is a matter of honor.

She emphasizes that “the reaction of the police is what I receive and from why two homicide directors have changed during the investigation into George’s murder and I receive from both of them that it is a matter of honor to find George’s killers” .

The widow of Giorgos Karaivaz emphasizes that the journalist’s murder is equivalent to a terrorist attack and asks that her pension not be cut, which is expected to happen 11 months from today.

“For me, what remains as a belief is that Giorgos is missing, this is the fact that they murdered Giorgos one afternoon, Giorgos did not come to his house”, she emphasizes.
