Nikos Kapravelos, ICU director at Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki, spoke about the pressure exerted on hospitals by the ongoing pandemic wave, speaking on SKAI TV and Giorgos Avtias.
“I listen carefully to you talking about Omicron (…) our issue is that we are under pressure from Delta”, Mr. Kapravelos stressed, noting that the latest data until December 31 in “Papanikolaou”, showed that there is no patient with Omicron in ICUs while in single beds there are 2-3 cases.
Hospital admissions remain high at around 50 in the last shift, while of the more than 140 who arrived at the hospital 90% are unvaccinated and there were some who were vaccinated with both doses.
Mr. Kapravelos, however, hastened to warn that there should be no complacency about Omicron.
As he said at the moment it has not yet caused a disease and morbidity similar to the Delta, however the WHO warns not to characterize it as a mild disease.
For her part, the president of EINAP Matina Pagoni stated that the attendance of patients in single beds has increased significantly, over 45%.
Especially for ICUs, he explained that the cases managed by the hospitals are exclusively of the Delta mutation with high-risk complications and mainly in unvaccinated patients.
