Why do electric car batteries perform best in Athens?

by

Athens is one of the three cities in the world where the battery of an electric car performs to the maximum. This is because batteries in electric cars are heavily influenced by environmental factors. The cold reduces the performance of the batteries, with their capacity being significantly reduced. Research has shown that environmental factors can affect and create large blockages of up to 25% in the batteries of hybrid plug-in cars.

According to a study conducted by the Idaho National Laboratory, which is one of the national laboratories of the United States Department of Energy, Athens belongs to the map of cities where electric cars have the greatest autonomy. The research carried out by the laboratory in several cities of the world, was done with a Tesla Model 3, which was driven under the same conditions, in the same specific way and the same percentage of energy in different cities of the world.

In Athens, the researchers found that the model traveled 351 kilometers, revealing that it is purely due to environmental parameters, but also to the average temperature of the city which is 17.5 C. The exact same kilometers were traveled in Los Angeles, a US state that had 425,300 registered electric vehicle users last year, while exactly the same mileage (351km) covered the Tesla Model 3 in Sydney, Australia’s largest city where the average temperature is at 18 C.

Mexico City, where the model had a range of 346 kilometers and an average temperature of 16 ° C, and Lisbon, where the range was 349 kilometers, complete the top five cities that make the most of an electric motor.

There are strong concerns in the EU today about emissions from the construction and use of electric vehicles. Research shows that during the life of an electric car there is a reduction of pollutants compared to a diesel engine.

Many governments around the world see electric vehicles as an opportunity to reduce emissions and achieve the goal of clean zero carbon. From the US to the UK, countries are beginning to ban the movement of cars with old euros, in favor of an electrical revolution. World leaders hope that this major shift in transportation will help the planet, according to the Paris Agreement.

In Europe, road transport is responsible for 1/5 of carbon emissions, with cars being a major part of the problem. On the other hand, sales of electric cars increased by 43% worldwide in 2020, despite the pandemic, while from this year more than 200 plug-in models will be available to hit the roads of the European Union.
