The opinion of the Committee of Experts on the Tempe disaster was received by the Minister of State Giorgos Gerapetritis.

The finding will be duly communicated to the Larissa Appeals Prosecutor who is conducting the investigation with a request for its immediate publication by the Ministry.

The Committee of Experts, which was established and established by the decision of the Secretary General of Transport of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, delivered today, Tuesday (18/04) to the Minister of State responsible for Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Georgios Gerapetritis, its conclusion, in which the systemic problems and malfunctions related to the train accident that took place on February 28, 2023 at the entrance to the Tempe Valley are investigated and highlighted.

In its announcement, the Commission assures that it worked intensively with an increased sense of responsibility from March 6, 2023 until today and carried out its duties independently and impartially, evaluating with pure scientific criteria all the data it collected from all parties involved.

At the same time, he points out that the Conclusion does not deal with attribution or apportionment of responsibilities, a competence which according to the Constitution and the law belongs only to the competent judicial authorities who are already working at a fast pace in this direction.

The main concern of the Members of the Commission was, after the analysis of the circumstances of the tragic accident, to highlight and identify the problems in the entire structure of those involved in the operation of railway transport, Bodies, Organizations and Authorities and in the exercise of the powers of natural or legal persons and in particular to propose solutions, which will contribute – in the context of the other investigations, studies, proposals and initiatives of the relevant Bodies and Authorities to the taking of all the required measures that will prevent the same or similar accidents in the future.

In particular, the Conclusion proposes a set of immediate, short-term and medium-long-term measures for the safe, orderly and efficient operation of rail transport in Greece.

It is the wish of the Committee that the Finding be used exclusively for the above purpose and in any case not be the subject of political or party exploitation or confrontation, a practice that is not consistent with the investigated event, which is tragic for all Greeks.
