Spooky images were recorded by the drone of the Up Stories group above the “Dirty Giants of Energy” as the lignite power generation units located in the Megalopolis of Arcadia are nicknamed.

The city of Megalopolis with its huge history both during antiquity and during the revolution of 1821 since Karytaina which was the stronghold of Theodoros Kolokotronis is just a few kilometers away but also the Virgin of Kolokotronis which his old man had made his tama Moria is located just outside the city and has inextricably linked its modern history with its power plants through the burning of lignite.

In 1970, it was decided to install and operate a steam power plant in Megalopolis.

Two identical power plants of 125 MW each were built, using lignite as raw material.

In 1975 the third power generation unit was operational and in 1991 the 4th power generation unit was put into operation.

The lignite of Megalopolis is considered to be of poor quality and the power plants may have employed thousands of workers over the years, thus supporting the local economy, but they acted as a hindrance both for the further local economy (agriculture, animal husbandry, etc.) and also for the tourism development of place as the picture with the fireplaces is not the most appealing.

The “sudden death” of the units essentially brought the end of an entire era and the residents of the area are already timidly starting to make their plans for the next day.
