Easter… went sour for the people of the Museum of Natural History of Crete, in Heraklion.

On Easter Sunday, the Museum was closed and on Monday its workers found themselves in front of a hideous sight!

Someone or someones had broken the door located at the northern entrance, entered the area, urinated and defecated in various parts of the Museum. On the door, on the stairs…

As the director of the MFIK and professor at the University of Crete, Nikos Poulakakis, reports to Cretalive, air conditioners had been put out of service and copper had been stolen. In fact, a pair of abandoned shoes was also found in the area!

A relevant complaint has been made to the Police.

On Monday, the Museum remained closed and on Tuesday it reopened with a guard, as the door had not been repaired. Finally, now the problem is fixed.

In a related announcement, Mr. Poulakakis states the following:

“The Exhibition of the Museum of Natural History of Crete is housed, as is well known, in the building of Palaia Elektriki on Sofoklis Venizelou Avenue on the beach front of Heraklion and is one of the landmark buildings of the city. The employees and partners of the museum believe that the museum has stood with respect towards a historical building of Heraklion, has highlighted it by using it as a museum and has stimulated the healthy visitation of the long-suffering area of Agia Triada, of which it is a member.

Unfortunately, the museum has from time to time received vandalism that has altered its appearance and temporarily suspended its work. We are very sorry to be the target of such actions, which we unequivocally condemn, as, among others, they pose a threat to the physical integrity of the people who carry out such actions – glass breaking, trespassing, graffiti, etc. -.

We hope that in the future we will not face similar incidents again. They are enough for us, and for the University of Crete, the natural enemies, time and sea, that threaten our building and are a great challenge for its maintenance”.
