“Raid” in the Greek seas this year, purple jellyfish are also present. They have already made their appearance on the coasts of the Ionian as well as of Attica.

Although it is early due to the cold temperatures, there are already records of purple jellyfish for 2023, as you can see in the map below:

According to the biodiversity observatory 2022 was the first summer in which there was an outbreak of purple jellyfish in the Ionian and the second summer for the Aegean.

As for the June areas, the huge migration in the winter that occurred in the period 2021-2022 from Spain to France, Italy and Malta brought about a large increase in the phenomenon in the Ionian, according to the Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory.

“For 2023, it is estimated that the Northern Aegean will be clean, with a few isolated appearances of purple jellyfish, while in areas such as Attica and due to last year’s situation, the appearances of purple jellyfish may sometimes be a little more intense. For the Cyclades we may have some isolated occurrences, while for Crete the western side may see a little more than we think it will, as well as for Southern Peloponnese”, reports biodiversitygr.org. For the Ionian Sea, more or less the same as last year are expected.

In any case, bathers do not need to worry as of now, because as pointed out “everything always depends on the weather and sea currents”.
