In the second degree, the case of the bloodshed that unfolded in January 2020 in Moiras is expected to be heard today before the Mixed Court of Appeal of Eastern Crete. with the victim 79-year-old Kostas Hatzakis.

The unfortunate old man executed by his landlady’s estranged husband, whom he did not even know. That night, by a miracle, there were no other deaths as the 54-year-old attacker, a former gymnast, after killing the unfortunate old man on the terrace of his house, shot and wounded the victim’s wife, while he opened fire on five minor boys who were anxiously trying to protect themselves from the bullets.

The wife, who was standing next to the 79-year-old, survived the accident thanks to the quick reflexes shown by their then minor grandson. The child, seeing the execution of his grandfather, managed to push his grandmother into the house and close the door.

The trial court unanimously found the defendant, a father of three, guilty of the bloodshed he caused. He did not recognize any mitigating circumstances and sentenced him to life imprisonment and 33 years in prison (20 of the 33 to be served) for the murder of the unfortunate Kostas Hatzakis, the attempted murder of the victim’s wife and minor children.

In his plea, the accused claimed that he did not remember anything from the fateful night, not even from the morning after his arrest as he was drunk. He apologized for the harm he caused and referred to his history of alcoholism.

However, in the trial the ex-wife of the accused was a catapult. “I know that day he came to kill. He was an evil and violent character. “The drink was just fueling his wickedness,” he argued, attempting to debunk the claim that he was drunk and didn’t know what he was doing.
