Huge damages in Kalymnos and especially in the area of ​​Skalia and Palionisos were caused by the storm with the heavy rain that occurred at the weekend.

Request to declare Kalymnos in a state of emergency

With an urgent request to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, the Regional Governor of the South Aegean, George Chatzimarkos, requests the declaration of a State of Civil Protection Emergency of the Municipality of Kalymnos, of the Regional Unit of Kalymnos, reacting immediately to the relevant request of the Municipality.

Specifically, in the urgent letter of the Regional Governor to the General Secretary of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, Lieutenant General P.S. e.a. Vassilios Papageorgiou, it is reported that, on the 8th and 9th of January 2022, extreme weather phenomena occurred with strong thunderstorms and stormy winds, which hit the Municipality of Kalymnos and which caused intense flooding, streams and landslides.

As a result of the above were floods, landslides, slope falls, landslides, excavation of retaining walls as well as extensive damage and destruction of the road network of v. Kalymnos causing major problems in access to many areas, disasters in the water supply network and disasters in settlements of the Municipality of Kalymnos (house disasters) in various locations (Arginonta, Skalia, Emporio, Palionisos), endangering the lives and property of citizens.

Because, as pointed out in the request of the Regional Governor, to address the situation requires special coordination and mobilization of staff and resources in addition to those available under normal circumstances, it is deemed necessary to declare the Municipality of Kalymnos P.E. Kalymnos in a state of Civil Protection Emergency.
