“And where are you still… We saw 40 degrees in Siberia last year, when it was 37 in Athens, 40 degrees in London for the first time, we saw forest fires in Siberia…” said the academic – emeritus professor of Atmospheric Physics at AUTH.
The academic spoke to SKAI and on the program “Mismatches” about the extreme temperatures observed in many parts of the planet Christos ZerefosEmeritus Professor of Atmospheric Physics at AUTH.
“And where are you still… We saw last year in Siberia it was 40 degrees, when in Athens it was 37, in London it was 40 degrees for the first time, we saw forest fires in Siberia and in northern Canada…” he said and continued:
“These are the signs of climate destabilization, which we should pay particular attention to, because in the Mediterranean we are in the red by all estimates. It is an area very vulnerable to extreme weather events and forest fires.”
Mr. Zerefos sounded the alarm about the fires saying that “this summer things are dangerous, because we lost half of winter.
There was a big disturbance with very low temperatures in the USA and Canada and very good weather in us.
But we lost half the winter and half the rains and this will have consequences because the soil will be drier. The dangerous thing is that the drought that we will encounter in the summer will be significantly dangerous.
The issue of desertification and drought needs a lot of attention, we have to watch out for forest fires. We must avoid that it poses a risk of fires.”
When asked if we are heading for disaster, Mr. Zerefos replied: “We are on the straight line for disaster, we are running at 900 km per hour against a wall and we are going to collide with the wall in the coming decades.”
As for the climate in Greece, he said we might not see 50s, but we might see 45s for days. We will have the phenomenon more often and it may last longer.”
Finally, he characteristically said: “Ask someone who lives in Sudan, because these are the temperatures we will face in Greece in 15-20 years. He wants a lot of attention for fires.”
