A strange bird sits on the branches of the trees in the lake Prospect Park in New York in recent weeks. Lately, crowds of birders have been visiting Prospect Park, hoping to see the bird up close.

Anhingas, a large waterfowl, have joined a number of other birds that have migrated further north. The name of the bird comes from the language of the Tupi Indians of Brazil and means “devil bird”. According to the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, this particular bird has been seen in New York for the first time since 1992.

Researchers argue that its unusual movement to New York is due – in part – to climate change. “What we are seeing is likely population movement due to climatesaid Andrew Fansworth, a researcher at Cornell Lab. Bird watchers have noticed other unusual feathered visitors to Prospect Park in recent months.
