Each counterfeit 50-euro note was bought for 14 euros by Senegalese in Athens.
Athletes, no criminal record and unemployed they are two young men, 21 and 22 years old, who would fill Volos with counterfeit banknotes. Unfortunately for them, the fake banknotes were noticed and they were arrested.
Shocked, their parents in Athens cannot believe that their children bought counterfeit money from Senegalese and came to Volos for three days to “push” them through shopping.
Since Sunday night they are prisoners and they will be tried tomorrow Wednesday, as they asked for a deadline. They admitted that they had done approx 15 transactions, while three victims have testified against them, as they had identified the counterfeit banknotes and handed them over to the police. The rest of the victims may not have realized that they were given a fake 50 euro for their transactions, since the action of the two young men started on Friday morning.
The two children told the Prosecutor’s Office yesterday that economic problems led them to the decision to buy the counterfeit notes, while the police also confiscated the money they received as change from their purchases. According to reports they bought each fake for 50 euros, 14 euros.
The counterfeit notes were 1,550 both young men were arrested on Sunday afternoon in Volos, by police officers from the Security Directorate.
They were noticed and recognized by a sports radio producer who also runs a coffee shop.
In their possession, as well as in an inspection carried out in I.X. passenger car, owned by one, which was seized as a means of facilitating their illegal activity, were found and seized in total:
- the sum of 1,450 euros in counterfeit 50 euro notes &
- the monetary amount of 1,040 euros in genuine notes and coins.
As it turned out, on Sunday afternoon, the perpetrators tried to pay with a counterfeit banknote in a coffee shop in the city of Volos, while on Saturday night they gave two counterfeit 50 euro banknotes to shops in the city, which, after being presented by the owners of the shops, were confiscated.
Yesterday they testified that their decision was a mistake, an impulse they have regretted. The two young men will remain in custody until tomorrow, Wednesday.
