MeToo: The first trial for rape of a minor athlete – Olympic witness Sofia Bekatorou begins

The first trial for rape reported in the context of the publication of data from victims of sexual abuse or meToo, which started a year ago with the first complainant, the Olympian Sofia Bekatorou, who will testify in the trial, begins today before the Mixed Jury Court.

The 39-year-old sailing coach accused of raping a minor athlete 10 years ago will sit on the bench. The accused is facing charges of continuous rape, abuse of indecency and seduction against the then 11-year-old sailing athlete and up to 14 years.

The temporarily detained coach has confessed that he had sex with the minor girl.

The 21-year-old, who was suffering today with the support and assistance of Mrs. Bekatorou, had reported a year ago to the Prosecutor what she experienced in the hands of her coach, confirming what she had already submitted to the prosecutor’s office for her case, the Olympian.

The coach had been arrested with rapid procedures on the island where he lived and had been transferred to the Athens Prosecutor’s Office and then to the investigative office where he had apologized for the acts attributed to him and had claimed that his love affair with the minor began not when she was 11 years old but later. He also invoked the “consent” of the victim, while in front of the investigator he had said that he still loves the victim and that the 21-year-old should “have a little patience, when I get out of prison I will marry her”.

According to the Prosecutor’s proposal for referring the coach to the court, the accused “used sexual and psychological violence on the minor in order not to reveal her rape to her parents”. The prosecutor’s office even emphasizes that the 39-year-old “shamelessly confessed that he had complete sexual relations with his minor athlete. He took advantage of her inexperience and her parents’ trust in him”.
